Drawing from Life in Charcoal

In this class, you'll learn how to create stunningly realistic charcoal drawings from life. Our experienced instructor will guide you through the basics of charcoal drawing, from understanding the different types of charcoal to mastering the techniques of shading and blending. You'll also learn how to capture subtle details, and how to edit out detail to create a more realistic composition.

By the end of the class, you'll have the skills and knowledge to create beautiful, realistic charcoal drawings without having to rely on photos. You'll also have the confidence to create your own artworks and take your drawing skills to the next level.

Why practice drawing from life?

Imagine you're on vacation somewhere far from home when you happen upon a beautiful scene; So you snap a photo and move on with your day.

Now imagine that instead of snapping the photo, you took a few minutes to sketch. You'll begin to notice details you hadn't seen before, and the light changing as the sun moves or a cloud passes overhead. 

Drawing from life is a meditation and a way to be present in the moment.  drawing created from life is a series of deliberate decisions made over time.

Learning this skill gives you a stronger ability to focus and translate visually, more control over the result, and will feel more freedom of creativity when you do decide to work from photos.

Is this course good for beginners?

YES! Even if you are a total beginner, if you want to create drawings that are realistic, with a good sense of proportion, depth, and shading, this class is perfect for you. I walk you through every mark in these demos and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish if you invest the time and the practice! In fact, every time I teach this course, my drawings improve because I'm spending the time focusing on these concepts. This is how I know it works!

What Materials Do I Need?

To complete this course at home, you will need white paper, gray paper, charcoal, white charcoal, some erasers and blending tools, a drawing board, a box or shelf for your still life, and a few other items that most people have around the house.
